Description: Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to more than 1500 homeless and low-income veterans annually in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. We promote and protect the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education, and partnerships with local, state, and national entities.
Swords to Plowshares is the only veterans service agency in the United States that provides a full continuum of care. We help vets, as well as families of vets, in the following areas:
Health & Social Services - Swords to Plowshares’ drop-in center provides emergency shelter, mental health services and referrals to homeless veterans.
Supportive Housing - Swords to Plowshares has operated successful stabilization and permanent supportive housing programs for more than two decades. At any given time, we have the capacity to house over 400 veterans, including 22 veterans with families, from all walks of life and generations of military service.
We operate seven different housing sites with multiple points of entry to address the many barriers veterans face on their path toward self-sufficiency. We offer the support services that improve outcomes, including Rapid Re-housing services, eviction protection, and money management programs to help keep veterans housed.
Family and Housing Services - Swords to Plowshares offers housing services to low-income and homeless veterans and their families through the VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. Is your housing stable? Are you behind in your rent? Are you at risk of eviction? Are you currently homeless or living in temporary housing?
Women Veterans - Swords to Plowshares understands that women veterans often struggle to access resources and care that addresses their identity as women and experiences in the military. Women veterans rely on systems of care that are often not equipped to address women and/or veteran-specific needs.
Veterans Academy - At Swords to Plowshares’ Veterans Academy, formerly homeless veterans can live in a supportive community.
Service Center - Our case managers and intake staff help stabilize veterans with crisis intervention, mental health assessments and treatment referrals, case management, in-house and community referrals, assistance securing emergency and permanent housing, and host of other critical needs. We first address veterans’ immediate needs, with such things as restoring medications or benefits, and continue to longer-range planning and services that will enable them to improve their health, economic and housing stability, and overall well-being so they can live independently in the community.
